Roblox Auction Banners

Framed banner print is over 3 feet wide!
The Maker Faire is the premier event for grassroots innovation, showcasing invention, creativity and resourcefulness. Makers are, in essence, like ROBLOX Builders.
To support the Maker Faire we’re auctioning a production proof of our 2010 Winter Banner. The banner was created by our Art Director, Jahrblox (who also happens to be a Maker Faire enthusiast!).
Here’s what Jahrblox says about this print…
Jahrblox working“The theme is a combination of game screenshots, photos, and Photoshop effects. I dressed up the characters with catalog gear and clothes, then went in game and posed them in front of a green screen using a tool by jeditkacheff, took a screenshot, and removed the background color in Photoshop. I painted the snow on top of the logo and the snowy hills, and then pasted in photos of trees. The blue rays are from a photo of the northern lights.”
The banner at auction was featured on ROBLOX in December 2010. The production proof is printed on glossy paper, signed by the artist – Jahrblox – and framed in a custom laminated 9” x 39” black wooden frame.

The 5-day auction is live here on eBay, with rush shipping available. 100% of the final value will be donated to Young Makers Program, the Maker Faire’s endeavor for youth involvement. Your family can support the Young Makers Program by bidding on this framed print  by Jahrblox. We think it will make a great gift, and it’s a great way to support innovation.

Cheers,

Roblox Fog

A new ROBLOX release went out late last night. It contained a lot of important performance improvements, but it also included a secret feature that some ROBLOXians have already discovered… atmospheric fog!

How to Add Fog to Your Place
Currently our default is that fog is turned off in your place until you turn it on. Luckily, enabling fog in your place is super easy.
  1. Open you place in ROBLOX Studio (ROBLOX Studio Help)
  2. Select the Lighting service in the Explorer Pane
  3. Adjust the fog properties (there are 3 – to see something all you need to do is set FogEnd to 100. Now you have a ton of fog.)
FogSettings
What the properties do:
FogColor – This is the color of the fog. For best results, use light grey or the background color of your skybox.
FogEnd – This is the distance at which the scene is 100% fogged.
FogStart – This is the distance at which the fog begins. Inside this distance you will not see fog.
Fog Settings: Getting Technical
A lot of ROBLOXians out there are programmers, so for those of you who are curious, let’s get technical for a second. To remain compatible with older graphics cards that use a fixed-function rendering pipeline, ROBLOX’s fog uses linear interpolation between FogStart and FogEnd. Other fog falloff functions are possible if you are using shaders; some of these are show in the graph below. ROBLOX is using GL_LINEAR – the red line. FogStart on this graph is 10 and FogEnd is 20. At a distance of 15, fog is at 50%. This means that a pixel in your scene that is 15 distance from the camera will be 50% it’s normal color blended with 50% of the fog color.

Fog Settings: Getting Artistic
The  Roblox Team had decided to expose the lowest level fog properties to users, allowing them maximum customizability in their places. We hope place builders will get really creative. Here’s one effect you can achieve if you make it night time in your place and set the
fog
color to black..

Testing this was pretty much fun! Try it out now!

ROBLOX Giftsplosion 2011

Gifts are showing up all over the catalog and even in your hat inventory! ROBLOX is rewarding players who have met certain conditions throughout the year. Roblox already released a couple gifts including – the dark hoard, spearmint gift of perfect attendance, the Generous Gift of the Rising Sun, Director’s Gift of MeTube, and Builderman’s Gift of Followers.  For those of you who have yet to experience the joy of a ROBLOX Giftsplosion here is how it works:

Information About Gifts

Gifts are given out for meeting specific conditions. In the past we have given gifts to every player who had 1000 profile views, or a verified email address, or a certain number of posts in the Scripting Helpers Forum. Sometimes it will be obvious what the conditions are. Other times it will be a mystery.
If you meet the conditions at the time when the gift is being given, you get the gift for free.
If you don’t, you don’t. Each gift is given out once and only once.
Don’t worry, you will get a chance to purchase the gifts you’ve missed before they open.
All gifts will eventually open. Players who own a gift box will get the gift that is inside automatically. The name of the gift box changes to let you know it has opened.
Once a gift has opened, there is no way to get it if you missed it.
Some gifts will be easy to get. Others will be awarded to only a select few.
